Expanding Protections Against NCII
Google announced on September 18,2024,that it is indeed strengthening its measures to prevent the spread of non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) online. This includes a new partnership with the South West Grid for learning (SWGfL) to develop more effective adn scalable solutions for victims of this abuse. The collaboration builds upon Google’s existing NCII removal processes.
Currently, individuals can request the removal of NCII from Google Search.Google has also been implementing ranking improvements to reduce the visibility of such content. However, recognizing the vastness of the internet, Google acknowledges the need to lessen the burden on those affected by NCII.
Proactive Removal Using StopNCII Hashes
To proactively identify and remove violating content, Google will begin utilizing stopncii’s hashes. These hashes are unique digital fingerprints of images and videos. By comparing uploaded content against these hashes, Google can automatically detect and remove imagery that violates its NCII policy.
StopNCII.org empowers individuals to protect their private images from non-consensual sharing. The organization allows adults to create a unique hash representing their intimate imagery. These hashes are then shared with participating companies, enabling them to identify and remove matching content from their platforms. This system shifts the responsibility of proactive detection from the victim to the platforms.
The NCII London Summit and Future Collaboration
google is demonstrating its long-term commitment to online safety by hosting and participating in the NCII London Summit on September 18, 2024. The summit brings together policymakers, industry leaders, and civil society organizations to foster dialog and collaboration on combating NCII and empowering survivors. The goal is to develop more extensive strategies for addressing this pervasive issue across the web.
