Google is introducing a major icon redesign for its Workspace applications, including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, featuring gradient-based visuals and softer shapes as part of a broader visual language tied to AI integration.
The redesign moves away from the previous requirement to include all four Google brand colors in every icon, instead adopting more focused color palettes for individual apps. For example, Google Drive no longer uses red and now emphasizes green, yellow, and blue — colors that align with its editor apps — in a rounded triangular form with a sharp center.
Gmail retains its familiar ‘M’ envelope shape but now uses gradients instead of solid colors, with a slightly more rounded appearance. Google Calendar shifts toward a more blue-dominant look, resembling earlier versions of the app, while Google Meet adopts a yellow-heavy design centered on a video camera icon.
Google Chat receives a pill-shaped message bubble with a friendly smile, using green as an homage to the legacy Hangouts app. Across the suite, the removal of the page container allows for larger, more distinct icons, improving visual differentiation.
The gradient effect, previously seen in icons for Google’s G logo, Gemini, Home, Photos, and Maps, is now extended across Workspace apps to reflect the presence of AI-powered features. This visual consistency aims to signal deeper integration of generative AI capabilities within Google’s productivity tools.
According to sources familiar with the matter, all Google Workspace apps are undergoing this overhaul, which addresses longstanding criticism about the previous icon set lacking distinctiveness in color, and shape. The updated designs are intended to be more recognizable at a glance while aligning with Google’s evolving brand identity in the era of Gemini.
The new icons have not yet begun rolling out to users, but early versions were shared by 9to5Google, providing the first public look at the redesign. Google has not announced an official timeline for the full release.
