Google Wallet Updates: Transit Passes Get Personalized Nicknames
Google Wallet users can now personalize their transit passes with nicknames, a feature designed to streamline the experience for those managing multiple cards within the app.
Personalization Arrives for Transit Titles
The addition of nicknames, already available for bank cards, extends to transit passes, offering a more intuitive way to differentiate between various cards and subscriptions. According to Google Play Services’ April update (version 25.13), this enhancement allows users to “add a nickname to your transport titles in Wallet.”

Previously, managing numerous cards or subscriptions in Google Wallet could be cumbersome, particularly for frequent public transit users. By enabling users to label a pass as “Paris Metro,” for example, Google aims to simplify wallet organization and facilitate speedy card recognition.
Gradual Rollout Underway
While the feature may not be immediately available to all users, the rollout is currently in progress. Android Authority reports that compatibility may vary initially, with some transit passes accepting nicknames while others do not. The reason for this partial compatibility remains unclear, with the possibility of temporary limitations or intentional restrictions on supported formats or providers.
This update follows Google Wallet’s recent support for the aliro Standard for connected locks, signaling a continued effort to consolidate identity documents and cards within the ubiquitous smartphone.
