Google Wallet Digital ID: States Rolling Out Mobile Driver’s License Support
Updated May 31, 2025
Android users in select states can now add their driver’s license or state ID to Google Wallet, offering a convenient digital alternative to physical cards. The rollout brings the promise of streamlined identity verification and enhanced security.
Google is also developing Zero-Knowledge Proof technology to allow users to verify their age without revealing personal facts. This system will be open-sourced, promoting wider adoption and enhanced privacy.
At I/O 2025,Google confirmed that digital IDs are “coming soon” to the six previously announced states and territories. The company highlighted the potential for digital IDs in age verification scenarios.

Adding Your State ID to Google wallet
To add your state ID on Android, follow these steps:
- Open the Google Wallet app (Android 9+).
- Tap “Add to Wallet.”
- Select “ID” and then “Driver’s license or state ID.”
- Choose your state and follow the prompts.
the process involves photographing the front and back of your physical ID and recording a short verification video. Google states that a photo from this video will be submitted to your ID issuer.
once approved, the digital ID appears in your Google Wallet. Users can rearrange the order of passes and remotely remove the ID via their Google account if the phone is lost.
Where to Use Your Digital ID
Currently, the primary use case for Google Wallet state IDs is at TSA checkpoints in participating U.S. airports. Users can tap their phone at the NFC terminal or scan a QR code to share their information with the TSA after authenticating with device unlock.
While digital IDs offer convenience, users are still required to carry their physical ID card.
Some apps, including those from car rental services, are beginning to accept digital IDs for identity and age verification. Additionally,DMVs in Arizona, georgia,Maryland, and New Mexico plan to integrate digital IDs for improved customer service.
Google is also exploring partnerships to enable digital ID usage for Amazon account recovery, online health services with CVS and MyChart by epic, and profile verification on platforms like Uber.
Using a Passport as REAL ID
google has emphasized that a U.S. passport can be used as a REAL ID within Google Wallet for domestic air travel at supported airports, even without a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state-issued ID. The deadline for REAL ID enforcement is May 7, 2025.
To add your passport, navigate to Google Wallet > Add to Wallet > ID pass. The process involves photographing the passport’s information page and scanning the security chip. A verification video is also required to confirm your identity.
The instructions for using the digital passport ID via NFC or QR code are the same as for state IDs. Remember to carry your physical passport,as the digital version is not valid for international travel.
What’s next
As more states adopt mobile driver’s license support, Google Wallet is poised to become a central hub for digital identity, streamlining everyday tasks and enhancing security. The ongoing development of privacy-focused technologies like Zero-Knowledge Proof further solidifies Google’s commitment to user data protection.
