Gordon Snell, the British author of children’s literature and husband of the late Irish novelist Maeve Binchy, has died at the age of 93, according to reporting from The Irish Times. Snell passed away in April 2026, leaving behind a legacy of work for young readers and a celebrated partnership with one of Ireland’s most beloved authors.

Snell was born in Singapore in 1932 and later attended Geelong College in Victoria, Australia, after his mother relocated him there during the Japanese invasion of Singapore in 1942. He later completed his education at Oxford University.

He began his career as a radio-studio manager at the BBC World Service before transitioning to scriptwriting for RTÉ, the Irish national broadcaster, where he contributed to the popular children’s show Wanderly Wagon. Snell’s published works for children include The King of Quizzical Island (1978), Amy’s Wonderful Nest, Tina and the Tooth Fairy, and The Supermarket Ghost.

A Literary Partnership

Snell’s relationship with Maeve Binchy began in the 1970s when she was appointed to the London office of The Irish Times. The couple married in 1977 and subsequently moved to Ireland in the early 1980s. Binchy, known for novels such as Circle of Friends and Tara Road, died in 2012. The couple did not have any children.

“Maeve and I always said we were very lucky, first to have met each other but also that we realised we were lucky. It’s one of the most important things.”

The couple’s enduring partnership was marked by mutual support and appreciation. Snell spoke fondly of their relationship in a 2023 interview, emphasizing their shared recognition of their good fortune.

Later Life and Health

In 2009, it was revealed that Snell had undergone a heart-bypass operation. He continued to live in the home he shared with Binchy in Dalkey, Ireland, until his death.

According to his Wikipedia page, Snell was also a friend and classmate of Bernard Donoughue while at Oxford. He collaborated with Adrian Mitchell on school plays at Dauntsey’s School.

Snell’s passing marks the end of an era for both children’s literature and the Irish literary community. His contributions as an author and his enduring love story with Maeve Binchy will be remembered fondly.
