an Entertaining Action Comedy
Nate (Jack Quaid), a bank’s deputy director, is a single, unassuming thirty-something with few friends. He harbors a crush on his colleague,Sherry (Amber Midthunder),a teller in an interesting dual role. Thier budding romance is disrupted when a robbery occurs, and Sherry is taken hostage. Nate, driven by courage, sets off in pursuit. His unique condition? He can’t feel pain, leading to humorous situations that form the core of the comedy.
The film employs diverse combat scenarios to generate humor: a kitchen brawl with improvised weapons, a booby-trapped house reminiscent of home Alone, a torture scene, and a car chase. This variety prevents the humor from becoming stale. The film balances action, gore, and humor effectively, showcasing torn nails, broken bones, and inventive deaths.

An Indestructible Hero?
Novocaine takes an unexpected turn in its final act with a critically important revelation, adding depth to the narrative. The supporting cast includes Ray Nicholson (Smile 2) as the villain, Betty Gabriel and Matt Walsh as police officers providing both humor and seriousness, Lou Beatty Jr. and Van Hengst in villainous roles, and Jacob Batalon (Spider-Man: no Way Home) delivering excellent comic timing.
While realism is absent, with Nate enduring excessive punishment, the film addresses this with a scene explaining his resilience.

Technically Weak
Technically, the film has shortcomings. While the stunts and gore are adequate, the overall technique is conventional. The direction relies heavily on handheld camera work, which is disappointing, although understandable given the $18 million budget.
The pacing, however, is strong. After a slow introduction to the characters and Nate’s condition, the film accelerates with the hostage situation and maintains momentum throughout its 1 hour and 50-minute runtime. Novocaine delivers on its promise of action, humor, and gore.
