MANILA, Philippines-The Philippines is bracing for the impact of Severe Tropical Storm ‘Gorio,’ the second storm to enter the contry this month and the seventh this year. As of Monday, ‘Gorio’ has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), prompting close monitoring from the state weather agency, PAGASA.
‘Gorio’s’ Current Status and Forecast Track
Weather specialist Daniel James Villamil of PAGASA reported that ‘Gorio’ was last spotted 1,305 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon. The storm is currently moving westward at 25 kilometers per hour (kph) and packs maximum sustained winds of 110kph near the center, with gusts reaching up to 135kph.
While ‘Gorio’ is currently far from land, PAGASA is closely watching its trajectory. There’s a possibility the storm could shift southward, potentially prompting storm signals in Northern Luzon, particularly in Batanes. Villamil noted that ‘Gorio’ may intensify into a typhoon within the next 12 hours. However, it’s also expected to gradually weaken as it moves through the PAR, potentially exiting by Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning.
Weather Outlook for the Philippines
Currently, ‘Gorio’ isn’t directly affecting the weather across the Philippines. Most areas, including Metro Manila, can expect generally fair weather over the next 24 hours. However, scattered and isolated rain showers and thunderstorms are still possible due to the southwest monsoon, locally known as ‘habagat.’
Elsewhere in the country, expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated downpours or thunderstorms, driven by localized weather systems. It’s always an excellent idea to stay updated with the latest forecasts, especially if you have outdoor plans!
Staying Prepared and Informed
Even though ‘Gorio’ is still distant, it’s a good reminder to be prepared. Here are a few things you can do:
Stay Informed: Regularly check updates from PAGASA (https://www.pagasa.dost.gov.ph/) and reputable news sources.
Secure Your Surroundings: Clear drainage systems around your home to prevent flooding.
Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include essentials like food, water, first-aid supplies, a flashlight, and a radio.
Heed Local Authorities: Follow any instructions or warnings issued by your local government.
We’ll continue to monitor ‘Gorio’ and provide updates as they become available. Staying informed and prepared is the best way to ensure your safety during these weather events.
