Meeting with André Ventura Yields No Common Ground
Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo stated that a meeting with André Ventura in August to discuss their respective presidential campaigns revealed a fundamental lack of alignment. Gouveia e Melo concluded there were “no intersections” between their political positions.
The Admiral downplayed Ventura’s entry into the presidential race, expressing a lack of concern due to their differing political ideologies. He questioned the rationale behind Ventura’s candidacy, stating, “I didn’t realize well why he entered these presidentials. I’m not worried because we don’t belong to the same political space.”
Emphasis on Independence
Gouveia e Melo emphasized his commitment to maintaining open dialog with other candidates, noting he has met with several contenders for the Presidency and does not wish to alienate potential allies. However, he sharply distinguished himself from the rest of the field.
The Admiral presented himself as the “only truly independent candidate,” asserting that other candidates are heavily reliant on party support. He warned that this dependence could create future complications.
Crowded Presidential Field
Gouveia e Melo announced his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic in May 2024. He joins a growing list of confirmed candidates, including António José seguro, Luís Marques Mendes, António Filipe, Joana Amaral Dias, João Cotrim de Figueiredo, and André Pestana.
