The Pakistani government appointed Dr. Kabir ahmed Sidhu as the new chairman of the Securities and exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) on January 10, 2026, according to a notification from the Finance Division.
Background of Dr. Sidhu
Dr. Sidhu currently serves as the chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), a role he began in August 2023.Prior to this appointment, he had a distinguished career in regulatory leadership and economic policy.
CCP Achievements Under Dr.Sidhu
During his tenure at the CCP, the association experienced substantial improvements. The CCP reduced its court case backlog by over 70 percent, resolving 434 out of 567 pending cases within two years, which helped to restore the regulator’s credibility and enforcement capacity.
Financial Recoveries and penalties
Under Dr. Sidhu’s leadership, the CCP recovered approximately Rs1.36 billion (approximately $4.8 million USD as of January 11, 2026) in penalties. This contrasts sharply with the previous 20 years, during which the CCP recovered only Rs200 million.The CCP also imposed over Rs2 billion in new penalties through enforcement actions.
Crackdown on Anti-Competitive Practices
dr. Sidhu initiated a renewed crackdown on cartels and market abuse while leading the CCP.Major investigations and enforcement actions were launched against cartels operating in sectors including poultry, sugar, edible oil, telecom, and medical services.
