The Swedish government is proposing a significant increase in financial support for the countryS regional airports, allocating an additional SEK 318 million in the 2026 budget. This brings the total annual state aid to SEK 528 million, a considerable rise from the SEK 103 million provided since 2022.
Addressing Persistent losses
Sweden’s 33 independently-operated airports, largely owned by municipalities and regional authorities, are facing considerable financial challenges. according to data from Swedish Regional Airports (SRF),these airports collectively incurred losses of nearly SEK 700 million in 2023,and projections indicate an operational deficit exceeding SEK 800 million for the current year.
Strategic Investment in Connectivity
The increased funding reflects a government commitment to maintaining vital transportation links within the country. As stated by a government representative, the aim is to “facilitate operations for these socially crucial airports.” This investment is part of a broader budget plan unveiled on September 22, wich includes a total reform space of SEK 80 billion, as announced by Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson.
