The government is allocating €30 million to compensate teachers for unpaid overtime accumulated since 2018, according to a recent announcement. This payment aims to rectify a longstanding issue of uncompensated work, with the Minister of Education emphasizing that this is a direct correction of past discrepancies.
Overtime and Unfilled Schedules
Along with the retroactive payment, another €20 million will be allocated this year for teacher overtime. The Ministry acknowledges the existence of unfilled schedules in some schools, but clarifies that these gaps do not necessarily translate to students being without instruction. Many of these unfilled slots are being covered by teachers working overtime, ensuring continuity of classes.
Tracking Student Impact
To gain a clearer understanding of the extent of any disruption, the Ministry of Education is developing a new information system. Once operational, this system will identify students who are without classes, specifying the subjects affected and the duration of the gap in instruction. As of December 12, 2025, the system remains under progress.
recent civil service strikes have impacted school operations. The Minister reported that eight percent of schools were closed during an initial strike action, while a subsequent general strike on Thursday led to the closure of fifty percent of schools nationwide.
