The UK government has taken direct control of Speciality Steel UK (SSUK), the nation’s third-largest steelworks, in a move to protect approximately 1,450 jobs. This action follows a High Court order on Thursday to wind up SSUK, which operates plants in Rotherham and Stocksbridge, after the company failed to secure additional financial backing. The decision underscores the strategic importance of the UK steel industry and the government’s willingness to intervene to safeguard employment.
The fall of Liberty Steel and the Role of Sanjeev Gupta
SSUK was formerly part of the liberty Steel group, spearheaded by businessman Sanjeev Gupta. Once hailed as a “saviour of steel” for his ambitious turnaround plans, Gupta’s empire began to unravel following the 2021 collapse of Greensill Capital, a key financial backer that had provided approximately $4.5 billion (£3.3 billion) in loans to his Gupta Family Group (GFG) Alliance. Administrators are currently attempting to recover £233 million owed to Citibank, among other creditors.
Gupta’s business practices are also under scrutiny. The Serious Fraud Office has been investigating GFG Alliance since 2021 for alleged “fraud, fraudulent trading and money laundering” related to the financing of the business, allegations which Gupta and GFG deny. He has already relinquished control of businesses across the UK, Europe, Singapore, and Australia.
Government Action and Future Prospects
following the High Court’s decision, the official receiver assumed control of SSUK, appointing special managers from the advisory firm Teneo to manage the operations. Mr. Justice Mellor emphasized the lack of certainty surrounding Gupta’s ability to secure funding and stated that the appointment of special managers with government support was the most appropriate course of action.
