SAN LUIS, Argentina (AP) — A provincial literacy plan, “We want to learn,” has significantly improved student knowledge, according to officials. Virginia Petrino, director of innovation and Planning, and Magdalena Lacunza, a literacy specialist, presented the plan’s effectiveness at a press conference Tuesday.
Literacy Plan’s Three-Pronged Approach
Petrino outlined the three key areas of the literacy plan. First, she emphasized education as a central tenet of Gov. Claudio Poggi‘s administration. “He puts education as an axis in his public policy,” Petrino said. Upon assuming office Dec. 10, officials sought to assess the educational landscape.
A diagnosis in april 2024 revealed that only 35% of students possessed the expected knowledge. “That is why the entire literacy plan is implemented,” Petrino stated, highlighting the governor’s commitment to literacy. A follow-up diagnosis in November showed marked advancement, with 75% of students demonstrating the expected knowledge.
“In November we could see the great advance that students had thanks to the work of managers, and the commitment of teachers,” Petrino added.
Personalized Learning Through Diagnosis
The diagnostic tool allows teachers to view individual student results, while directors can see the overall performance of thier institutions. This enables personalized instruction. Petrino noted that a new diagnostic assessment, launched Monday, aims to further refine this process. “To be able to evaluate the situation with which we find each boy in each grade,” she said, regarding the purpose of the new assessment. The results are currently being compiled.
Materials and Teacher Training
The second key area involves providing materials and training to teachers. This includes traced cards for early learners, vowel and consonant materials for primary school students, and newly added reading comprehension booklets.
According to Petrino, materials where distributed to schools, including those in rural areas, starting Feb. 24, coinciding with the “Connecting places” program, which also provided computers for students to use on reading platforms.
Lacunza stressed the importance of teacher training, detailing virtual and in-person sessions. “We organized virtual instances, synchronous, but when the teacher could not attend those synchronous instances, he saw the recordings, we gave them material to study, we took certain activities to solve,” Lacunza said.
face-to-face training sessions were held in various locations. “We realized that we lack this face -to -face instance to be able to personally show them what the advancement of strategies is like,” Lacunza explained.
Neurodiversity and Literacy
The final area of focus is the implementation of a literacy plan tailored for neurodiverse students. This involves collaboration with special education teachers and pedagogical support staff to personalize diagnoses for students with PPI or CUD.
Lacunza described how teachers adapted the program for neurodiverse children, sharing videos of their methods. The special branch then began to work following the same method, proposing adaptations of the materials to each of the children according to their need.
“We have specialists, we have educational psychologists, we have psychopedagogues who are working along and from the empirical what we have seen in the application of our program is that Autistic children, blind children, have learned the same with adaptations that teachers have made,” Lacunza said. She emphasized the importance of believing in the potential of these students.
Lacunza also highlighted the rigorous development process of the program. “The doctor (Ana) Borzone is very demanding,” she said. New materials undergo pilot testing, and those that prove ineffective are modified or discarded.
