Documentary on Organ Harvesting Sparks Controversy in Taiwan

On November 27, 2024, the documentary “State-Owned Organs” premiered in Taiwan. The film reveals the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) alleged practice of harvesting organs from living people for profit. Following its release, cinemas, government offices, and legislative bodies received numerous death threats.

In response, lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties questioned officials in the Legislative Yuan. They emphasized that intimidation and organ harvesting are unacceptable in Taiwan.

Shen Yuzhong, Deputy Chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council, noted that the international community has long criticized the origin of organ transplants in mainland China. He referred to new regulations on organ donation and questioned whether the CCP has a hidden agenda regarding organ harvesting claims.

People’s Party legislator Lin Yijun highlighted that the documentary sheds light on illegal organ harvesting by CCP officials. He mentioned that several institutions, including theaters and the Ministry of Culture, received threatening emails.

Democratic Progressive Party legislator Shen Bang raised concerns about police handling of these threats. He urged transparency and quick action regarding the sources of intimidation.

Wang Dingyu, a Democratic Progressive Party legislator, expressed support for the documentary, stating that it should not be suppressed due to fear of backlash. He called for continued efforts to reveal the truth about cross-border repression from the CCP.

Kuomintang lawmakers also voiced their support for the film, condemning any threats against free speech. Lawmaker Ma Wenjun emphasized the need to protect Taiwan from organ harvesting and intimidation.

The National Security Bureau reported 28 cases of intimidation related to the documentary, including seven in Kaohsiung. They warned that the CCP is attempting to create a united front against Taiwan and vowed to monitor these threats closely.

The documentary “State-Owned Organs” continues to be screened in Taiwanese cinemas, highlighting serious concerns about human rights abuses in mainland China.
