Indonesia is accelerating efforts to eliminate over-dimension and overloading (ODOL) in its logistics sector, aiming for a “Zero ODOL” policy by 2027. A collaborative commitment was forged at a recent meeting between government officials and national logistics driver associations at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, signaling a unified push towards safer roads and infrastructure.
Collaborative Effort to Enforce Zero ODOL
A joint team will be established to formulate policies reflecting the needs of logistics drivers, following a directive from President Prabowo Subianto to expedite the enforcement of the Zero ODOL policy. This decision was announced by Deputy Speaker of the House, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, after productive discussions with representatives from the Nusantara Logistics Drivers Association (APLN) and other key stakeholders.”Toward the 2027 Zero ODOL goal, we have agreed together with the government and the Nusantara Logistics Drivers Association (APLN) to establish a joint team to formulate several policies based on the aspirations of our colleagues from APLN,” Ahmad stated.
The urgency of the issue was underscored by Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, who conveyed President SubiantoS close attention to the problem of over-dimension and overloading. Minister of transportation, Dudy purwagandhi, affirmed the government’s readiness to implement technical measures to support the agreement.
“We agreed that a joint commitment is important to enforce the Zero ODOL policy and several matters that we need to prepare related to its implementation will begin instantly carried out,as agreed in the meeting,” Purwagandhi explained. He emphasized the meeting’s productivity and the clear agenda established for achieving the 2027 target.
Addressing Driver Concerns and Ensuring Policy Success
A crucial element of the initiative is incorporating the perspectives of logistics drivers. Suroso, chairperson of the Independant Drivers Alliance (API), expressed strong support for the policy and pledged the commitment of Indonesian logistics drivers.
“Fundamentally, the drivers will agree, and together with the government and DPR, we will support the path toward Zero ODOL policy by 2027. We are in full agreement that the Zero ODOL policy must be implemented and enforced by 2027 in our country. As drivers, we stand united in this commitment,” Suroso affirmed.
This collaborative approach aims to ensure the policy’s successful implementation by addressing the concerns of those directly impacted and fostering a sense of shared responsibility. The government recognizes that effective enforcement requires not onyl regulations but also the cooperation and understanding of the logistics community.
the Importance of Zero ODOL for Indonesia’s Infrastructure
The zero ODOL policy is vital for preserving and improving Indonesia’s road infrastructure. Overloaded vehicles significantly contribute to road damage, leading to increased maintenance costs and disruptions to transportation networks. By eliminating ODOL, the government aims to extend the lifespan of roads, reduce repair expenses, and enhance overall transportation efficiency.
Beyond infrastructure preservation, the policy is expected to improve road safety. Overloaded vehicles have reduced braking capabilities and increased susceptibility to accidents, posing a risk to drivers and other road users. Enforcing weight limits will contribute to a safer transportation surroundings for everyone.
Recent reporting highlights the prioritization of truck supervision and driver wages as key components of the Zero ODOL strategy. This holistic approach acknowledges the need to support drivers while ensuring compliance with regulations. The government is also focused on strict enforcement to achieve the goal of zero overloaded trucks, recognizing that consistent submission of the law is essential for success.
