OpenAI Launches GPT-4.1: A Faster AI Model for Coding Assistance
Updated June 03, 2025
OpenAI has launched GPT-4.1,a new AI model designed to provide faster coding assistance. This release follows the removal of GPT-4 from ChatGPT on April 30. The GPT-4.1 launch has been relatively quiet, especially compared to the initial hype surrounding GPT-4 in March 2023.
The introduction of GPT-4.1 also coincides with OpenAI’s plan to retire the GPT-4.5 Preview from its API by July 2025. Developers will need to transition to other models, though GPT-4.5 will remain available within ChatGPT for the time being.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the company’s complex AI model naming system in february. He indicated that the future GPT-5 model would consolidate the o-series and GPT-series models. Though, the addition of GPT-4.1 appears to complicate this simplification effort.
Currently, OpenAI is maintaining GPT-4o as the default model in ChatGPT. This decision is highly likely due to its versatility and balance between speed and capability. Models like 03 and 04-mini-high offer more systematic analysis and web research but are slower.
Users shoudl remember that all AI models, including GPT-4.1, are prone to generating inaccurate data. It is crucial to verify the outputs from these models with other sources.
What’s next
As OpenAI continues to refine its AI models, users can expect further adjustments to the capabilities and availability of diffrent versions. The focus will likely remain on balancing performance, speed, and cost while addressing the issue of accuracy in AI-generated content. The future release of GPT-5 may bring further clarity to OpenAI’s model offerings.
