Gradius Origins Review – Gamereactor
Gradius Origins: A Blast from the Past, But Not Quite Complete
Table of Contents
The shoot ’em up genre, or shmup as it’s affectionately known, holds a special place in gaming history. And within that realm, the Gradius series stands as a titan. gradius Origins aims to bring a hefty slice of that legacy to modern platforms, and for the most part, it succeeds brilliantly. However, a few notable absences prevent it from being the definitive collection fans have long dreamed of.
A Purist’s Paradise – And Its Limitations
This collection is clearly geared towards those who grew up with, and deeply appreciate, the classic Gradius experience. M2, the studio renowned for their meticulous arcade ports, has done a fantastic job of preserving the feel and challenge of these titles. The inclusion of options to adjust difficulty, and even tweak game speed, is a welcome touch, allowing players to tailor the experience to their skill level.
But let’s address the elephant in the room: what isn’t included. While Gradius Origins features a solid core selection, at least five Gradius games are missing. Specifically, fans will notice the absence of Gradius for NES, Gradius 4, Gradius V, Gradius Rebirth, and Gradius Gaide.
It’s a bit of a head-scratcher, especially considering Konami‘s recent success with the excellent Contra Anniversary Collection. You’d think they’d aim for the same level of completeness here. While the package we did get is perfectly enjoyable, it’s hard not to feel a pang of disappointment that Konami didn’t quite hit a home run this time.
What Gradius Origins Gets Right
Despite the omissions, Gradius Origins delivers a fantastic experience where it counts. The core gameplay remains as addictive and challenging as ever. The iconic power-up system, where you strategically build a customized loadout, is a cornerstone of the Gradius appeal. Learning enemy patterns, mastering the shield, and maximizing your firepower are all crucial to survival. The visual presentation is also top-notch.M2 has faithfully recreated the look and feel of the original arcade games, with crisp graphics and authentic sound effects.the inclusion of various display options – including scanlines and different aspect ratios – allows you to customize the visuals to your liking. It’s a real treat for retro gaming enthusiasts.
Moreover, the collection offers a robust rewind feature, allowing you to correct mistakes and learn from your failures. This is a especially valuable addition for newcomers to the series, or for those who find the games particularly challenging. It’s a great way to ease yourself into the Gradius experience without feeling overly frustrated.
A Missed Prospect for a Definitive Collection
Ultimately, Gradius Origins is a worthwhile purchase for fans of the series. The core games are excellent, and M2’s attention to detail is commendable. However, the missing titles are a notable drawback.
It feels like a missed opportunity to create the ultimate Gradius collection – a definitive package that would celebrate the entire history of this iconic franchise. While we can appreciate what is here, we can’t help but wonder what could have been. Hopefully, Konami will consider revisiting this idea in the future and giving fans the complete Gradius experience they deserve.
