Grammys Revamp Country Album Categories, Packaging Awards

The Recording academy has updated its rulebook in advance of the 2026 Grammy Awards, introducing key changes too the country and packaging categories.The announcement follows Beyoncé’s 2025 win for Best Country Album and aims to better reflect the current music landscape.
The Best country Album category will now be split into two distinct awards: Best Contemporary Country Album and Best Traditional Country Album. This division seeks to recognize the diverse styles within the country music genre. In 2016, Beyoncé’s “daddy Lessons” was rejected by the country music committee.
Meaningful changes are also coming to packaging awards. The Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package category will merge with Best Recording Package, forming a single, more comprehensive award. Additionally, albums sold directly to fans will now be eligible for packaging Grammys.
Eligibility for Best New Artist has also been expanded. Previously, contributors to Album of the Year-nominated records were ineligible. Now, those who would not have met the tighter Album of the Year eligibility criteria introduced in 2023 are once again eligible for Best New Artist.
Harvey Mason Jr. said the changes reflect the Recording Academy‘s commitment to adapting to the evolving music industry. Nominees for the 2026 Grammy Awards will be announced Nov.7, 2025. The awards ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 1, 2026.
