Grand Slam Track Cancelled: Athletics Competition Update
Global sprint Series Faces Controversy Despite Financial Incentives
Updated June 13, 2025
The Global Sprint Series (GSS), showcasing elite athletes such as British Olympic sprinters Daryll Neita and Matthew Hudson-Smith, along with 1,500m world champion Josh kerr, has encountered both praise and problems in its inaugural year. The competition offered considerable financial incentives, including $100,000 for race category winners, alongside salaries for contracted athletes, to attract top talent and boost the profile of sprint series events.
The format divides male and female competitors into six categories, each featuring eight athletes. Within groups like Short Sprints, athletes compete in both 100m and 200m races each weekend, creating a dynamic and competitive environment. Despite the high stakes and star power, the Global Sprint Series has faced challenges.
One major issue was an alleged abuse incident involving American three-time Olympic champion gabby Thomas during the Philadelphia meet. Additionally, Michael Johnson, the series organizer, expressed his desire for increased spectator attendance after the Kingston event in April suffered from poor turnout. These challenges underscore the difficulties in establishing a successful new venture in the world of athletics and sprint series events.
Despite these setbacks, organizers maintain that the three meetings held were a success. Johnson, at the event’s launch, acknowledged that immediate financial success might be elusive but expressed confidence in the long-term viability of the global sprint Series.
“The actual experience, the set-up, the hype, the marketing, was brilliant,” said British middle-distance runner Elliot Giles, who participated in the Philadelphia leg.
Giles added that he would like to see the event return, emphasizing the need for competition within the sport. He drew parallels to boxing, noting how new promoters and venture capital investment can lead to explosive growth and improved performances.
What’s next
The future of the Global Sprint Series remains uncertain, but organizers hope to address the controversies and attendance issues to build a more enduring and successful competition in the coming years, further boosting the profile of sprint series events.
