According to authorities, Dates’ mother discovered her mother bleeding in her Memphis home next to a blood-covered hammer. The victim was found with her backpack and lunch bag, suggesting she had just returned from work. An affidavit indicated she suffered four wounds to the back of her head caused by blunt force.
Police located the grandmother’s missing 2020 Chevrolet Camaro and pulled Dates over.Dates reportedly told officers, “I hit Sonya in the head with a hammer and I think I killed her.”
Dates faces charges of first-degree murder and property theft.His mother told police that Dates had been living with his grandmother and that the two had been fighting recently. She had even suggested her mother evict Dates for her own safety.
