Grasping the Future of Food Security: Strengthening China’s Rice Bowl
China’s Grain Production Achieves Outstanding Development in 75 Years
Significant Increase in Grain Production and Yield per Unit Area
According to a series of reports on the achievements of economic and social development of New China in the past 75 years, released by the National Bureau of Statistics, China’s grain production has achieved outstanding development, and food security has been effectively guaranteed. In 2023, grain production reached 1,390.8 billion kilograms, an increase of more than 1 trillion kilograms or 5.1 times compared with 1949. The grain yield per unit area has also increased significantly, with the national grain yield per unit area reaching 389.7 kilograms/mu in 2023, an increase of 321.1 kilograms/mu compared with 1949.
Agriculture as the Foundation of People’s Security and the Key to Governing the Country
As a large agricultural country, China has always focused on agriculture as the foundation of people’s security and the key to governing the country. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the Party Central Committee and the State Council have continuously issued policies to support and benefit agriculture. Various regions and departments have conscientiously implemented these policies, leading to increased agricultural economic activities and a more optimized industrial structure.
Food Safety as the Top Priority
Food safety is considered the most important thing in a country. All regions have always tightened the constraints of food safety and food production control, achieving remarkable results. In 2023, the total output value of agriculture, forestry, livestock, and fisheries reached 15,850.7 billion yuan, an increase of 15,804.6 billion yuan compared to 46.1 billion yuan in 1952.
Development of Agricultural Science and Technology
The development of agricultural science and technology in China has made great progress in the past 75 years. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the country has accelerated the realization of high-level scientific and technological self-sufficiency, cultivated and developed new agricultural productivity, and accelerated the development of agricultural science and technology. In 2023, the national rate of contribution to the progress of agricultural science and technology reached 63.2%, an increase of 8.7 percentage points compared with 2012.
Ensuring Food Security from a Strategic Perspective
Despite the achievements in grain production, China must ensure food security from a strategic perspective. The country must be aware of the challenges posed by internal and external issues such as politics, economics, and climate, and take measures to consolidate all-round food security and achieve long-term results.
Implementing the Most Stringent Farmland Protection System
To ensure food security, China must implement the most stringent farmland protection system. The country will resolutely safeguard 1.8 billion acres of cultivated land, the “lifeblood” of grain production, and make good use of scientific and technological means to improve the level of mechanized operations.
Developing Intelligent Agriculture and Scientific and Technological Agriculture
Looking to the future, China must always keep in mind the importance of food security and effectively strengthen the protection of cultivated land. The country will establish a “big food concept”, make good use of the “grain law”, implement the “grain policy”, and vigorously develop intelligent agriculture and scientific and technological agriculture to safeguard national food security at a high level.
