His family announced “with profound sadness” that the musician “succumbed to underlying lung issues” on Saturday at the age of 78.
Weir was only 16 when he teamed with a 21-year-old Jerry Garcia to launch what would become the premier jam band of its era. While Weir was content playing second fiddle to Garcia, the rhythm guitarist and easy-going vocalist stepped up to front such Dead classics as “Truckin’,” “Sugar Magnolia,” ”Playing in the Band,” and their cover of “Good Lovin.'” Other notable Weir-led tracks include ”Cassidy,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Jack Straw,” “Weather Report Suite,” and “The Other One.”
