Bob Weir, co-founding singer and guitarist for the Grateful Dead and its subsequent iterations, has died. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family after battling lung issues, according to a statement on his website.Weir was 78.
He was diagnosed with cancer last July and continued performing, including three farewell shows with Dead & Company last year. Footage of that final performance is available online.
Born Robert Hall Weir in San Francisco, he was raised by adoptive parents. He began playing guitar as a child and met Jerry Garcia at 16,forming a musical partnership that would define a generation. They started as a folk duo, Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions, evolving into the Warlocks and ultimately the Grateful Dead.
The Grateful Dead debuted in 1965 at one of Ken Kesey’s acid tests, quickly becoming central to the Bay Area’s counterculture. Known for their lengthy,improvisational performances,Weir and Garcia shared vocal duties and developed a unique musical interplay,blending country,jazz,and blues influences. Weir penned or co-wrote Grateful Dead staples like “Sugar Magnolia,” “Playing In the Band,” and “One More Saturday Night,” and sang lead on the beloved track “Truckin’.”
Weir released his first solo album, Ace, in 1972, backed by his Grateful Dead bandmates. he also explored other projects like Kingfish and Bobby And The Midnites. However, the Grateful Dead remained his primary focus, maintaining a dedicated following for decades.
Following Garcia’s death in 1995, Weir led RatDog and participated in various Dead offshoots, including the Other Ones, Further, and Dead & Company, featuring John Mayer. Dead & Company achieved critically important success, notably with acclaimed residencies at the Las Vegas Sphere in 2024 and 2025. More recently, Weir toured with Wolf Bros, performing symphonic concerts.
