Great Basin College and Nevada Gold Mines partnered to host 41 students and staff members for a Women in CTE & Mining Rocks experience on November 13. The event, held at the Carlin Complex, focused on highlighting the various Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways that support Nevada’s mining industry.

Participants in the event traveled from several locations, including Carlin, West Wendover, Owyhee, Jackpot, Elko and Spring Creek. The program was designed to connect classroom learning with the large-scale industrial operations of the Carlin Complex.

Industrial Tours and Technical Demonstrations

During the visit, students participated in an immersive tour of key facilities, including the Central Shop, Mill 5, and the Truck Shop. These stops provided a behind-the-scenes look at gold processing and the industrial maintenance required to keep complex equipment operational.

A primary highlight of the tour occurred at the Truck Shop, where students observed diesel technicians performing work on a new Komatsu 930 haul truck.

The event also emphasized the human element of the industry. Students met with women currently leading in the mining sector and spoke with recent graduates who have moved from their academic studies into careers in industrial technology.
