On September 6-12, 2025 (week 37), the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported a confirmed case of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in Greece. the individual affected is a migrant originating from a non-endemic country in North africa, who arrived in Greece in late June 2025. Initial residency was on a Greek island, followed by placement in a migrant accommodation centre in Attica (Attica region).
Symptoms manifested at the end of July 2025 (week 30/2025, July 20-26, 2025).The ECDC report indicates the mode of transmission is currently indeterminate, with investigators considering both mechanical transmission – such as sharing contaminated needles or razor blades – and mosquito-borne transmission as possibilities.
Risk Assessment
The ECDC assesses the risk of malaria infection for citizens of the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEE) who live in or travel to affected areas as low. However, this case highlights the potential for re-introduction and localized transmission, particularly in migrant populations.
