Greenland’s CONCACAF Membership Bid Rejected
Updated june 11, 2025
Greenland’s attempt to join CONCACAF, the confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean, has been rejected. The Greenland soccer (KAK) applied a year ago, before then-U.S. President Donald Trump suggested acquiring the Danish territory.
Founded in 1971, KAK aimed for CONCACAF membership as it did not meet UEFA’s requirements for independence and governance.
Kenneth Kleist, KAK president, announced the rejection in a social media post, stating that CONCACAF secretary-General Philippe Moggio sent a letter declining Greenland’s request to become its 42nd member.
According to the federation, Greenland is the only territory globally not affiliated with a regional confederation, preventing it from participating in official international matches. This impacts Greenland soccer development.
The decision “does not make football accessible to everybody, and it shows that small nations have a lot of difficulty to obtain the authorisation to play under their proper flag,” Kleist said.
What’s next
The Greenland soccer federation will likely need to reassess its strategy for gaining international recognition and providing its players with opportunities to compete at a higher level.
