Greg Gutfeld Tonight Show Jimmy Fallon Welcome
Jimmy Fallon‘s Attempt to Woo Trump Backfires Before It Begins
Jimmy Fallon recently hosted Greg Gutfeld, the conservative commentator from Fox News, on The Tonight Show in what many saw as a calculated move to appeal to Donald Trump. While the gesture might garner Fallon and NBC a sliver of goodwill from the fox News crowd – and it already has, with Fox & Friends calling Fallon their favorite mainstream host and touting Gutfeld as the “king of late night” – it appears unlikely to sway the former president himself.
Trump’s Continued Disdain for Late Night Hosts
Just days before Gutfeld’s appearance, trump doubled down on his public criticism of late night television hosts. At a press conference, he bluntly stated, “Fallon has no talent. Kimmel has no talent. They’re next.” He continued, suggesting their eventual dismissal was unavoidable, even acknowledging Stephen Colbert’s comparatively better ratings.”They’re going to be going. I hear they’re going to be going. I don’t know, but I would imagine because they’d get-you know, Colbert has better ratings than Kimmel or fallon.”
This isn’t a new sentiment. Weeks prior, Trump took to his Truth Social account to declare, “Greg Gutfeld is better than all of [the hosts] combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show.”
A Pattern of Unrequited appeasement
Fallon’s attempt to court Trump, thus, feels like another instance of a public figure attempting to appease someone who seems determined to remain unimpressed – and even actively opposed. He joins a growing list of individuals, including Senator Ted Cruz, who have sought Trump’s favor despite facing his public scorn.
The question remains: why continue to seek approval from someone who consistently offers criticism instead of reciprocity? It highlights a challenging dynamic where public figures seem willing to endure insult in the hope of securing a positive acknowledgment from the former president. While a brief moment of Fox News approval might be a small consolation, it’s clear that Fallon’s gesture is unlikely to change Trump’s mind.
