“This has certainly been an unexpected six weeks for my family and me,” Popovich said in a statement released through the Spurs. “As we work together on my recovery, I want to take a moment to share that the outpouring of support we’ve received during this time has been truly overwhelming in the best possible way.”
While there is no set timetable for his return, the Spurs have stated that doctors anticipate a full recovery for the 75-year-old coaching legend.
Popovich’s absence has been felt deeply by the Spurs organization and the NBA community. Longtime assistant Mitch Johnson has stepped in as acting coach, guiding the team through a challenging stretch.
“Mitch has done an incredible job,” Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said earlier this month, highlighting Johnson’s leadership during a challenging time.
Known for his dry wit and demanding coaching style,Popovich even poked fun at his own rehabilitation process.
“No one is more excited to see me return to the bench than the talented individuals who have been leading my rehabilitation process,” Popovich quipped. “They’ve quickly learned that I’m less than coachable.”
Popovich’s legacy in the NBA is undeniable. He has led the Spurs to five NBA championships and coached the U.S. men’s national team to a gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. His 1,400+ career wins are the most in NBA history, cementing his place as one of the greatest coaches of all time.
As Popovich continues his recovery, the basketball world eagerly awaits his return to the sidelines.
