Gregg Wallace Responds to Middle-Class Women Accusations: A Candid Discussion on Criticism and Stereotypes
BBC’s MasterChef presenter, Gregg Wallace, faces allegations of making sexual comments towards staff and guests. He responded to these claims in an Instagram video, suggesting the complaints stem from “middle-class women of a certain age.”
Wallace, 60, stated he has worked with over 4,000 contestants over 20 years and acknowledged learning of 13 complaints during that time. He expressed disbelief at the limited number, questioning the broader context of female contestants making similar remarks.
Among the latest allegations, Wallace reportedly made lewd comments and asked female production staff for their phone numbers. A letter from a producer sent to the BBC in 2022 summarized anonymous reports of sexism and harassment in the TV industry, highlighting Wallace’s behavior.
The BBC announced that Wallace will step back from MasterChef while an external review of these historical misconduct complaints is conducted by producer Banijay UK. His lawyers categorically deny the allegations, stating that it is false he engages in sexually harassing behavior.
The letter from producer Dawn Elrick mentioned a pattern of inappropriate conduct from Wallace and called for action from the BBC. Elrick emphasized the challenging position women in production face when high-profile figures make uncomfortable remarks.
Following the report, a BBC spokesperson affirmed their commitment to addressing issues raised and conducting thorough investigations.
Wallace later posted a cryptic message on Instagram stating, “We are all different.” Additional accusations regarding his conduct on other shows have also emerged, prompting investigations by various production companies.
Banijay UK stated that they will cooperate fully during this investigation and expressed their commitment to staff welfare and appropriate behavior standards. They have opened a channel for individuals to report concerns confidentially.
A law firm has been appointed to lead the investigation into Wallace’s alleged behavior.
