Updated June 01,2025
Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has joined a group of international activists sailing to the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition confirmed Sunday that the ship, named Madleen, departed from Catania, Sicily, carrying 12 activists.
The group intends to challenge what they describe as Israel’s “illegal blockade” of Gaza, delivering essential supplies and drawing global attention to the region’s humanitarian crisis. Baby food and medical provisions are among the items on board.
Thunberg, known for her climate activism, has increasingly focused on advocating for Palestinians and criticizing Israel’s actions during the Gaza conflict. The current offensive in Gaza began after Hamas attacks in October 2023 and has lasted more than a year and a half.
Last month,a previous attempt to deliver aid to Gaza was disrupted when a fire broke out on one of the activist ships near Malta. While activists claimed it was a drone attack, the Maltese government disputed this.
Israel recently eased some restrictions on the entry of food, medicine, and other vital supplies into Gaza. The nation states its actions are aimed at pressuring Hamas to release hostages.
what’s next
The Madleen’s journey to Gaza will be closely watched as activists attempt to deliver aid and raise awareness of the ongoing humanitarian situation.
