Updated June 11, 2025
Greta Thunberg, the 22-year-old climate activist, says she was unaware that fellow members of the “Freedom Flotilla” held views supporting Hamas and Hezbollah. Thunberg told Swedish media that she hadn’t “heard about it or what this person has said.”

When questioned about why she didn’t research the views of her fellow passengers before embarking on the Gaza-bound ship, Thunberg responded, ”Should I ask exactly everyone what exactly they have said about everything? It would take some time.”
Thunberg was among a dozen passengers aboard the British-flagged Madleen, a vessel carrying aid intended for Gaza. The vessel’s crew has faced scrutiny due to some members’ controversial public statements and expressions of support for terrorist organizations. The activist’s involvement in the Freedom Flotilla has drawn criticism, given the presence of individuals with documented ties to extremist groups.
Among the controversial crew members is Brazilian activist thiago Avila, who reportedly attended the funeral of Hassan Nasrallah, a slain Hezbollah leader, referring to him as a “beloved” leader and “martyr.” Avila stated he was “very honored” and “very happy” to attend the funeral, describing it as something that “amazed him,” further noting nasrallah was an “crucial figure” who “inspired people all over the world.”
Yasemin Acar, also on board, allegedly celebrated Iranian rocket attacks on Israel and reportedly made racially charged remarks during a protest, telling a white woman, “You’re a white person, you shouldn’t tell us what to do.”

What’s next
The controversy surrounding the Freedom Flotilla and its crew is highly likely to continue, raising questions about due diligence and the vetting of participants in activist initiatives.
