Grindr Settles UK Privacy Lawsuit for £26 Million Over HIV Data Sharing Claims

Grindr has agreed to pay £26 million to settle a group privacy lawsuit in the United Kingdom brought by 12,000 users who alleged the dating app shared highly sensitive personal information, including HIV status, with third-party advertising companies, according to reporting from the BBC.

The settlement resolves a two-year legal battle initiated in April 2024, when the London law firm Austen Hays filed a claim at the High Court of England and Wales on behalf of users affected by data practices occurring up to early 2020. If the £26 million payout is distributed equally among the claimants, each participating user will receive an average compensation of £2,167. Grindr agreed in a United States regulatory filing to disburse the funds in two equal installments of £13 million, with the first payment due by the end of this year, and the final installment scheduled for March 2027.

Liability Disputed Despite Financial Resolution

The formal agreement includes no findings or admission of liability by the company, according to details cited by TradingView. Grindr stated in its regulatory filing that it disputes the underlying allegations regarding the historical data practices. However, the company acknowledged the distress and loss of trust expressed by its UK user base concerning the period prior to 2020.

Parent firm Gateley, representing Austen Hays, noted in statements that clients entrusted the firm with a sensitive case regarding privacy violations. During the period in question, Grindr was owned and controlled by the Chinese gaming company Beijing Kunlun Tech. San Vicente Acquisition subsequently purchased the app in a $608m deal, and Grindr later floated on the New York Stock Exchange through a special purpose acquisition company merger in 2022.

Regulatory Pressures and Historical Data Practices

The UK litigation follows a series of international regulatory penalties and investigations into the app’s handling of user data. In April 2018, West Hollywood-based Grindr announced it would halt sharing users’ HIV status with third-party vendors following an investigation by Norwegian researchers that uncovered data sharing with two outside companies.

Those findings culminated in a 2021 penalty when Norway’s data protection authority fined Grindr 65m Norwegian krone (£4.8m), or 10% of its global revenues, for violating data protection rules. Norway’s court of appeal upheld that penalty, rejecting Grindr’s marketing claims that it did not sell personal user information to third parties for advertising purposes.

Corporate Overhaul and Current Operations

In response to the historical controversies, Grindr stated in its regulatory filings that it has overhauled its privacy program since 2020 with a specific focus on the needs of its community. The company maintains that it operates as a safe space committed to transparency, user control, and responsible data management.

Financial analysts examining the transaction note that the £26 million settlement represents a substantial cash outlay for the company, equaling roughly 93% of one quarter’s cash flow according to TechStock² estimates. Despite the financial impact, Grindr is now worth $2.65bn (£1.96bn), serving a user base of nearly 15 million individuals worldwide.
