Grizzly Bear Obsession: A Fatal Mistake – Aktuálně.cz
Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenardová, returned to Alaska’s Katmai National Park on September 29, 2003, despite leaving just days earlier as winter approached. They hoped rain would bring more fish and concentrate the bear population for further observation. Just six days later, tragedy struck.
treadwell,46,wasn’t afraid of grizzlies. he believed he shared a unique bond with the massive animals, considering them soul mates. He spent years among them, naming them – “Fat Man” and “Long Man” among others - and claiming to understand them better than anyone.
A six-minute audio recording from Treadwell’s video camera, found with the lens cap still on,captured the harrowing sounds of the bear attack that occurred on October 5,2003,one day before their scheduled departure.
An ordinary boy who loved animals
Born Timothy Dexter in 1957 on Long Island, New york, Treadwell was one of five children. Those who knew him described an ordinary boy with a fondness for animals. He excelled as a swimmer in high school and earned a diving scholarship to college.
His parents say his life took a turn in college. “I think that’s where he started drinking and hanging out with bad people,” recalls his mother, Carol Dexter.
In his 20s, he moved to California, changed his last name to Treadwell, and pursued acting. He didn’t find success, reportedly losing an audition for the television show Cheers to Woody Harrelson. “It took a toll on him,” says his father, Val Dexter.
By age 30, frustrated and adrift, he impulsively rode a motorcycle to Alaska, where he began spending summers among grizzlies, filming them closely and asserting a deep understanding of their behavior.
Between bears without any protection
Treadwell’s dedication to bear protection began in the late 1980s, following a near-fatal heroin overdose. He described his first close encounter with a bear in his book, Among Grizzlies, as “looking into a mirror.” This experience prompted him to get sober and ignited a lifelong passion for the animals.
