  • Data privacy⁣ and‌ security concerns drive the⁢ bans.
  • ChatGPT and Gemini also face‌ restrictions‌ in Europe.

European Firms Ban Grok AI Chatbot Amid Data Security concerns

⁢ Updated May 29, 2025
‍

A recent study by cybersecurity firm Netskope reveals that a quarter ⁣of european organizations‍ have blocked access to Grok, the⁣ generative AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company. This move highlights growing concerns‍ over data privacy ‍and ‌security within the European business sector.

In‍ comparison,⁣ ChatGPT, the most widely used ⁤AI application, faces bans in ⁢only 9.8% ⁢of European organizations, while Google’s Gemini is ⁣blocked by 9.2%.‌ the ‌disparity suggests specific worries about Grok’s ⁢handling of sensitive⁣ facts.

Grok has faced scrutiny following instances of spreading misinformation, including‌ false claims ⁤regarding a “white genocide” in ⁤South Africa⁤ and⁢ questioning established facts about the Holocaust. These incidents‌ have amplified ⁢concerns about the chatbot’s security protocols and data management practices.

Neil‌ Thacker, Netskope’s global privacy and data protection officer, emphasized the⁢ increasing⁤ awareness among businesses regarding⁤ the⁤ varying data privacy practices of different ⁤AI tools. He‍ stated,”Businesses⁣ are becoming aware that ⁢not all apps ‍are ⁣the same in the way they handle data privacy, ownership of ‌data that is ⁤shared with‌ the app,or ‍in how much detail ‍they reveal about the way they train the‍ model with⁣ any data ⁣that is shared ‌within prompts.”

The Netskope report indicates that 91% of‍ European organizations are integrating cloud-based chatbots into their operations, demonstrating the widespread adoption of generative AI. However, the‍ rejection of‌ Grok, often⁢ in favor ⁤of “more secure or better-aligned ⁤alternatives,” underscores a ⁢selective approach ⁢to AI implementation.

Gianpietro Cutolo, ‍cloud threat researcher at ‍Netskope,‍ noted‌ the growing understanding of risks associated with specific ‌AI bots. “They’re becoming more savvy that not all AI is equal when it comes to data security,” Cutolo ‌said.

Stable Diffusion, ‍an image generator from ‌UK-based Stability AI, is the most‌ frequently blocked AI‍ app in Europe, with 41% of⁣ organizations barring its use, primarily due to ‌privacy and licensing concerns.

The increasing bans on Grok coincide with challenges‌ faced by⁣ other Musk ⁤ventures, including a significant drop in ‌Tesla sales within Europe. Some ⁣analysts suggest a potential link between Musk’s public persona and the negative reception of his products, including ‍the Grok AI chatbot, which he once touted as a⁤ “truth-seeking AI.”

What’s next

As European organizations ⁢become more discerning in‌ their adoption of AI, the focus will likely shift toward implementing robust data governance policies and carefully evaluating the security and privacy features of each AI tool.
