Musk’s xAI to Rewrite Human Knowledge with Grok
Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, plans to leverage Grok 3.5, perhaps renaming it Grok 4, to rewrite the entire body of human knowledge. Musk announced on X that the aim is to correct errors, add missing information, and eliminate what he considers “garbage” from existing foundation models.
Musk has long sought to create products, including the rebranded X and Grok, that are free from perceived mainstream constraints. He previously tasked Grok’s “AI tutors” with training the bot on controversial topics to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Gary Marcus, a New York University professor emeritus and AI critic, likened Musk’s initiative to an “Orwellian dystopia.” He stated on X that Musk, unable to align Grok with his beliefs, intends to rewrite history to conform to his views.
the potential impacts of a revamped Grok are significant.Reuters reported in may that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was considering expanding its use of Grok to analyze government data. One source told Reuters that DOGE uses Grok to answer questions, prepare reports, and analyze data. Other sources indicated that Department of Homeland Security officials were encouraged to use Grok, even without formal approval. A department representative told the New Republic that DOGE has not mandated the use of any specific tools.
Grok has faced security challenges. In May, an “unauthorized modification” led the bot to reference “white genocide” in South Africa.xAI addressed the issue, conducted an inquiry, and implemented measures to improve Grok’s transparency and reliability.
What’s next
xAI’s efforts to refine Grok and its knowledge base will continue, with potential implications for AI’s role in shaping information and its use in government and other sectors.
