‘Grounded 2’ Sequel Expands Bug-Riding with unreal Engine 5

⁢ ⁤Updated⁤ June 10, 2025

Obsidian Entertainment is developing ‘Grounded 2,’ a sequel that allows players to mount⁣ and ride bugs. This⁢ feature was highly requested by the community⁢ and is a primary reason for creating a sequel.

The original ⁢’Grounded’ faced ⁤limitations in handling new content, particularly⁤ rideable bugs. According ⁣to Obsidian, moving to Unreal Engine 5⁢ allows for a much⁤ larger and more immersive game world. The team⁣ also wanted to tell a new, complete story separate from the first game.

Executive producer Marcus morgan said the original game, built for the‍ original Xbox One, was running out of space‍ for new additions. This limited the ability to⁢ expand the game and maintain immersion. The team also realized that ⁤the game spaces weren’t designed for the new traversal style that rideable bugs⁤ would introduce.

To address these ⁣challenges, Obsidian partnered with Eidos Montreal, the studio behind ‘Marvel’s Guardians of the ⁣Galaxy.’ Morgan praised the collaboration, noting that ⁣Eidos played a significant role⁢ in shaping the story and antagonists for ‘Grounded 2’.

The game is ⁣slated ⁣for early access on Xbox and PC, with no immediate plans for PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, although the original⁤ ‘Grounded’⁢ eventually⁣ made its⁣ way to those platforms.

⁤ ⁢ We started Grounded 1 on ‍the original Xbox One.⁤ And we were running out of room to actually physically ⁢get things into the game.

What’s next

Obsidian⁣ anticipates a similar advancement⁣ path for ‘Grounded 2’ as with the first game: a couple of years in early access, followed by a 1.0 release. ⁢The⁤ team ⁤remains flexible, prioritizing community feedback throughout the early access phase ⁣to shape future content.
