Growing Demand for Saudi Dates in Europe: Untapped Market Potential
Growth Potential for Saudi Dates in Europe
Jochem Geheniau of Yogi & Yousef highlights the large growth potential for Saudi dates in Europe. Despite currently low consumption rates, demand for dates is rising.
Saudi Arabia produces around 1,000 date varieties, though only about fifteen are commercially available. Geheniau emphasized that Saudi dates are among the best in taste and nutrition, likening them to apples, which come in many flavors. New varieties of dates continue to develop.
Yogi & Yousef supplies various Saudi dates, including the popular Sukkari variety, to retailers in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. Historically, most date consumers were from Arab backgrounds; however, people’s interest in healthy sweet options is growing. Geheniau noted that date consumption is increasing at about 50% annually.
Consumers are discovering versatile uses for dates. They incorporate them into breakfast cereals and use them in cooking.
There is also a rising demand for organic Medjool dates. Israel currently does not supply them, creating a market gap. Yogi & Yousef is assisting a Moroccan farmer who grows organic Medjool dates, but production remains small. For now, the company is focused on the ample supply of dates from Saudi Arabia.
