Gujarat Titans are looking to maintain their momentum in the 2026 Indian Premier League as they prepare to host the league leaders, Punjab Kings, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
The Titans enter the match following two consecutive victories, including a win over the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, on Thursday, April 30, 2026. These results have positioned Gujarat on the verge of the top four in the standings.
Batting Strategy and Reliance on Top Order
Despite the team’s recent success, Gujarat Titans continue to grapple with a long-standing issue in their middle order. The team remains heavily reliant on its top three batters—Shubman Gill, B. Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler—for run accumulation.
According to reporting from Sportstar, the combined contributions of these three players account for nearly 68 per cent of the team’s total runs this season. This mirrors last season, where the trio contributed more than 70 per cent of the side’s runs.
The team’s success has been largely driven by chasing; four of their five wins this season have come while batting second. In three of those victories, at least one of the top three batters scored a fifty. In the most recent win against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gill and Buttler provided an early surge that secured the result in a 156-run chase.
Bowling Strength and PowerPlay Dominance
While the batting order shows some imbalance, the Titans’ bowling attack is currently operating with high confidence. The opening partnership of Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj has been particularly effective in the early stages of matches.
Rabada has emerged as the most successful bowler in the PowerPlay this year, claiming 10 wickets. Siraj has taken six wickets in the same phase and maintains an economy rate of 6.95, which is the second-best among bowlers who have bowled at least 60 balls during the PowerPlay.
The match will be played on Pitch No. 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, a surface where Rabada previously reduced the Mumbai Indians to 44 for three during the PowerPlay earlier this season.
Supporting the pace attack, Arshad Khan has stepped up in the absence of Prasidh Krishna, securing five wickets across two games. Arshad and Jason Holder combined for five wickets in the victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Punjab Kings’ Vulnerabilities
Punjab Kings currently sit at the top of the table, though their dominance in batting has masked significant weaknesses in their bowling. The team struggles during field restrictions, conceding runs at an economy rate of 10.86 and taking only nine wickets in the PowerPlay—both figures ranking among the bottom four in the league.

Punjab’s death bowling is similarly strained, with an economy rate of 11.25, the second-worst among the 10 teams in the competition.
The match also features a key tactical battle between Rashid Khan and Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer. While Iyer has historically struggled against the leg-spinner with a strike rate below 120 across the IPL, he previously took 17 runs off Rashid in nine balls during their last encounter at the Ahmedabad venue.
