Police Commander Fired After Video Surfaces Showing Officers Abusing Young Men
Celaya, Guanajuato – A high-ranking police commander in Guanajuato has been dismissed following the emergence of a disturbing video showing officers brutally assaulting and humiliating two young men. Christian Eduardo Morales Palomino, former coordinator of the Region IV Forces of Public Security of the State (FSPE), was removed from his position after an internal examination confirmed his involvement in the 2020 incident.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, depicts officers slapping, punching, and verbally abusing the young men. The officers can be heard forcing the victims to fight each other and even kiss, using degrading and threatening language.
“Any conduct that violates human rights is absolutely unacceptable and contrary to the spirit and values of the People’s Government and this institution, whose mission is to protect the integrity of the people of Guanajuato in strict adherence to human rights,” the Secretariat of Security and Peace stated in a press release.
While the abuse occurred in 2020 when Morales was serving as the operational coordinator for the Celaya Police, before his appointment to the FSPE,the Secretariat emphasized its commitment to accountability and transparency.
The Secretariat announced that as a preventative measure, training on protocols of conduct will be reinforced for all officers to prevent future violations of human rights.
“In the people’s Government, we reiterate our commitment to transparency, justice, and the construction of a security based on respect for the dignity of all people,” the statement concluded.
This incident comes just weeks after Governor Libia García Muñoz Ledo and Security Secretary Mauro González Martínez unveiled the Coordinated Operational Strategy of the New Anti-Crime Intelligence force (CONFIA), a new security initiative aimed at strengthening public safety across the state. Morales was the coordinator for Region IV under this new strategy.
