Cleveland’s Star Closer Under Scrutiny as League Continues Betting Probe
The Cleveland Guardians have been notified by Major League Baseball that thier star closer, Emmanuel Clase, has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of an ongoing sports betting investigation. The league’s decision, made in agreement with the Players Association, impacts one of baseball’s most dominant relief pitchers.
Guardians Cooperate with MLB Inquiry
The Guardians released a statement confirming their awareness of the situation and their commitment to cooperating with MLB’s investigation.”The Guardians have been notified by Major League Baseball that as part of their sports betting investigation, Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave per an agreement with the Players association,” the team stated. “We have been informed that no additional players or Club personnel are expected to be impacted.”
The team emphasized their adherence to the league’s protocols, adding,”The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time, and will respect the league’s confidential investigative process as we continue to fully cooperate.”
Clase’s Stellar Career and Recent Performance
Clase, a three-time All-star, has been a cornerstone of the Guardians’ bullpen. He has led the American League in saves for the past three seasons. The 27-year-old pitcher has posted a 3.23 ERA with 24 saves this season. Prior to this progress, Clase was widely speculated to be a sought-after trade piece ahead of the MLB trade deadline. In 2024, he was a Cy young finalist for Cleveland, showcasing an exceptional 0.61 ERA and 47 saves over 74.1 innings pitched.
Broader Context of MLB Gambling investigations
The placement of Clase on leave follows a similar action taken against pitcher Michael Ortiz on July 3. Ortiz was placed on leave after MLB initiated an inquiry into in-game prop bets placed on two of his pitches during starts on june 15 and june 27. These specific pitches reportedly received higher betting activity than usual, which was flagged by a betting-integrity firm and subsequently reported to MLB.
These investigations into Ortiz and Clase occur just over a year after MLB suspended five players for gambling violations. The most severe penalty was a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano, who was found to have placed 387 baseball bets totaling over $150,000 with a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023. Other players, including Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and minor leaguers Jay Groome, Zac gallen, and José rodríguez, received one-year suspensions. Umpire Pat Hoberg was also dismissed by MLB in february for sharing his legal sports gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games and for deleting relevant electronic messages.
The Guardians, currently second in the AL Central with a 52-53 record, were scheduled to begin a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies on Monday night. The team’s bullpen, and indeed their season, faces meaningful disruption with the absence of their primary closer.
