Extremadura Boosts Economy With new measures, self-Employed Aid
Updated June 27, 2025
Extremadura is rolling out new economic measures aimed at boosting employment and supporting the self-employed. During the recent debate on the state of the region, President María Guardiola highlighted the government’s success in lowering unemployment to 68,635, marking the first time the region has fallen below 70,000 unemployed. Guardiola noted that Extremadura has added 10,000 workers, primarily women, helping to close the gender gap.
Guardiola credited her government’s “road map,” developed in collaboration with Extremaduran businesses, for the positive results. A key focus will be transforming the public employment service to better connect companies with job seekers through “active policies.” The economic measures include a “Business Catwalk program” to retrain workers for sectors like construction, tourism, industry, and health.
To promote stable employment, Guardiola introduced two new aid programs: the “bonus drives” and the “bonus drives defense.” The first offers a €15,000 subsidy to companies that hire long-term unemployed individuals. The second targets those transitioning from the armed Forces.
according to Guardiola, Extremadura has led in salary increases, which, combined with tax reductions, has boosted purchasing power. The region’s GDP grew by 2.8% in 2024, outpacing the Eurozone average. In 2024, 1,350 new commercial companies were created, and 600 new freelancers registered.Guardiola emphasized that there are now 27,732 self-employed women in Extremadura,a record number.
New aid for the self-employed includes a program to waive Social security fees for those earning less than the interprofessional minimum wage. This measure was initially proposed in the extremadura general budgets. Additional aid for the self-employed includes the “Rate Stay,” designed to support those over 65 who continue to work.
Guardiola also announced the creation of five new industrial estates with a €33 million investment, along with business parks funded by a €1.2 million budget. Progress has been made on the three logistics areas of Navalmoral, Expacio Mérida, and the Iberian Southwest logistics platform, with reserved land being released to prevent speculation.
