A Mole Ignored, A Life Altered
Two years ago, Tom Jones, a hospitality head on the island of Herm, noticed a mole on his chest. He admits he “didn’t bother with” it, dismissing it as a minor inconvenience. The mole would occasionally feel “a little itchy,” but otherwise, it caused him no meaningful trouble. This seemingly insignificant symptom, though, was a harbinger of a much larger, more insidious problem lurking beneath the surface.
The Shocking Diagnosis: Melanoma’s Silent Growth
A routine visit to the doctor revealed the unsettling truth: the mole was a melanoma that had been growing rapidly and undetected under his skin.”Don’t think that little itch is nothing because it’s what’s underneath is the problem, not what’s on top,” Tom now warns, his voice tinged with the gravity of his experience. “It came back to haunt me.” The melanoma, a significant 4.5-inch growth under his right nipple, had become a serious threat.
A Life-Altering Surgery: The price of Delayed Action
The melanoma’s aggressive growth meant that a simple incision was no longer an option. tom’s chest had changed, the growth altering in color and becoming “quite an annoyance.” After being checked over at the hospital, he was informed that the melanoma had been present for “an awful long time” and had significantly developed beneath his skin. The only course of action was a complete removal of his right breast. “It had been growing quite rapidly underneath the skin, so thus it wasn’t treatable with a small incision, it had to be taken out fully,” Tom explained.
A Call to Action: Prioritizing Sun Protection
While the surgery was prosperous in removing the melanoma, Tom remains vigilant, attending regular check-ups to monitor his health. His personal ordeal has fueled a powerful commitment to raising awareness about sun safety, especially for visitors to the island. “I’m personally more aware of that than anyone else because I have fallen foul to not protecting myself,” he states candidly.
Tom’s message is clear and urgent: “Don’t hesitate, get that sun cream on, and if you’ve got an itch, get it checked.” He emphasizes that sun safety is a matter of personal responsibility. “It’s everyone’s personal responsibility and it’s realy important for you to bring some protection with you [to the island].”
This story is part of BBC Guernsey’s Sun Safety Campaign,a vital initiative aimed at educating the public about the dangers of excessive sun exposure and the importance of early detection for skin cancers like melanoma. Tom Jones’s heroic sharing of his experience serves as a powerful reminder that even the smallest changes on our skin deserve our attention.
