Italian Data Protection authority Member Resigns Amid Inquiry
Guido Scorza resigned from his position as a member of the Italian Data Protection AuthorityS board on January 17, 2026, following an investigation into allegations of embezzlement and corruption. Scorza informed the Authority’s President, fellow board members, and Secretary-General Luigi Montuori of his decision, according to Il Fatto Quotidiano.
Scorza was appointed to the board in 2020 following a nomination by the Five Star Movement. He was the sole member to vote against a 150,000 euro fine levied against the investigative journalism program Report, a decision that triggered subsequent journalistic investigations by Report and Il Fatto Quotidiano.
Despite his dissenting vote on the fine, Scorza became subject to scrutiny due to perceived conflicts of interest between his role as a Data Protection Authority member and his founding of the E-Lex law firm. Investigators are examining whether the Authority improperly handled complaints from clients of E-lex,where his wife continues to work.
“I decided to take a step back – in the interest of the Data Protection Authority. It has been five and a half beautiful years on the right side of the world. For now, thank you to everyone, but goodbye from the same side – that of rights, freedoms, and democracy,” Scorza
