A 16-year-old student was taken into custody at Rock Island High School on Monday after a loaded firearm was discovered by the school’s weapon detection system during morning arrival, according to police and school officials.
The student was arrested after the Evolv weapon detection system flagged a possible firearm in the student’s possession, prompting school security to search the backpack and contact the Rock Island Police Department, officials said.
Police responded to the school at 1400 25th Avenue around 10:00 a.m. Following reports of a student with a gun. The student was detained and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a stolen firearm, according to authorities.
The student was transported to a juvenile detention facility pending further court proceedings, and the incident remains under investigation by the Rock Island Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
Rock Island High School is located along the Mississippi River in western Illinois, near the Iowa border and approximately four miles from Davenport.
