Masahiro‍ Nakajima, an associate professor at the Tokyo University of Science, led a ⁣team that discovered the novel β-galactosidase enzyme in the bacterium Bacteroides xylanisolvens. The enzyme specifically targets galactose-containing glycans, which may have prebiotic effects. The findings were published Jan. 16 in Communications Biology.
