Masahiro Nakajima, an associate professor at the Tokyo University of Science, led a team that discovered the novel β-galactosidase enzyme in the bacterium Bacteroides xylanisolvens. Researchers found that the Bxy_22780 gene in B. xylanisolvens encodes the novel β-galactosidase.
