Situation in El Fasher Deteriorates
the United Nations is deeply alarmed by the escalating violence in El Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan, and the associated risks to civilians. UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated on Thursday that the UN is “alarmed at the grave risks of serious violations of international humanitarian law as well as violations and abuses of international human rights law, including ethnically motivated ones.”
The situation is particularly dire as humanitarian aid struggles to reach those in need. Supplies are pre-positioned near El Fasher, but the UN and its partners are facing meaningful obstacles in delivering them to the city.
Aid Delivery Blocked
Approximately 70 trucks carrying vital humanitarian assistance are currently stranded in Nyala, South Darfur, awaiting permission to proceed, according to the UN Office for the coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) . This blockage severely hinders efforts to alleviate the suffering of the population in El Fasher.
Repeated attacks targeting humanitarian personnel and assets in North Darfur over recent months have further intricate aid delivery and put the lives of aid workers at risk.
Call for Ceasefire and Civilian Protection
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a strong call for an immediate ceasefire in and around El Fasher. He emphasized the urgent need to protect civilians and ensure the safe, unimpeded, and sustained delivery of humanitarian assistance to the area.
The secretary-General also stressed the importance of allowing civilians who wish to leave the area to do so voluntarily and safely. This highlights the growing displacement crisis and the need for safe corridors for those fleeing the violence.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue
Ramtane Lamamra, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, is actively engaging with the warring parties to halt the violence and facilitate an inclusive political process. He remains “ready to support genuine efforts” towards a lasting peace, reflecting the UN’s commitment to finding a resolution to the conflict.
