Gwadar, Pakistan – The Balochistan government has pledged its unwavering support for the full operationalization of Gwadar Port, signaling a significant push to transform the strategic coastal hub into a cornerstone of the national economy. This commitment was underscored by Chief Minister mir Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti, who emphasized the provincial government’s dedication to key progress initiatives, including enhanced public facilities, increased employment opportunities for the youth, and improved regional connectivity.
Boosting Regional Connectivity and Economic Growth
A central focus of the discussions was the potential ferry service between Gwadar and Oman.CM Bugti indicated that the provincial government is giving “serious consideration” to this initiative, which is expected to “facilitate pilgrims and ease travelling for the local population.” The Chief Minister assured “full cooperation from the Balochistan government,” stating that this venture “will prove to be a milestone in strengthening regional connectivity.”
The Balochistan government’s commitment extends to actively supporting all proposed development projects by the Gwadar Port Authority. The aim is to ensure that Gwadar Port can “play a central role in the national economy.” This comprehensive backing is crucial for unlocking the port’s potential as a major transhipment hub, a vision that has long been envisioned for the multi-billion-dollar infrastructure facility.
Addressing Water Scarcity and Empowering Youth
In a significant step towards resolving a long-standing issue, the provincial government announced plans to provide 1.2 million gallons of clean drinking water daily to Gwadar citizens. This will be achieved through a desalination project to be established under the Gwadar Port Authority, marking a “significant step toward a lasting solution to the long-standing water issue.”
Furthermore, the government is prioritizing youth empowerment through skill development and overseas employment. CM Bugti affirmed the government’s commitment to providing “world-class training to the youth.” This will be facilitated through the Pak-china Technical Vocational center, which will impart various skills. The centre will also support the provincial government’s ambitious program to train and provide overseas employment to 30,000 youths, thereby creating significant economic opportunities for the region’s young population.
Renewed Efforts to Commercialize Gwadar Port
These developments come in the wake of increased national efforts to commercialize Gwadar Port. Despite being built over a decade ago,the port has struggled to gain traction as a transhipment hub, leading to concerns about its status as a “white elephant.”
Earlier this year, the government actively sought the private sector’s support in routing thier cargoes through the port, inviting detailed proposals to enhance trade volumes. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal revealed that Prime Minister shehbaz sharif has issued directives for the formulation of short- and medium-term strategies to ensure the effective operationalization of Gwadar Port within the next six months. A key aspect of this strategy involves a comparative analysis of Gwadar’s trade costs with those of other regional ports, aiming to identify and address any competitive disadvantages.
The renewed focus and the Balochistan government’s robust support signal a promising new chapter for Gwadar Port, with the potential to significantly boost Pakistan’s economic landscape and regional integration.
