At the dawn of her 36th birthday, Alvina did not expect to receive a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, as she had no family history or risk factors related to this type of cancer.

Gynecological cancers are challenging to diagnose due to the lack of perceptible symptoms in the early stages and the absence of effective screening tests. Symptoms, when present, often mimic other benign conditions. As a result, vigilance is crucial: It is important to listen to your body and consult a healthcare provider at the slightest doubt.

In Alvina’s case, persistent fatigue, loss of appetite, sudden menstrual irregularity, and pelvic pain alerted her to seek immediate medical help. After undergoing extensive testing, including an MRI that revealed a suspicious mass, she was referred to a gynecological oncologist. The biopsy performed during surgery confirmed the mass was cancerous, leading to invasive surgery and subsequent chemotherapy.

Four weeks later, the diagnosis was confirmed: a high-grade, stage 1 ovarian cancer. This news profoundly altered Alvina’s life and that of her loved ones. Chemotherapy was recommended to reduce the risk of recurrence given the aggressive nature of her ovarian cancer subtype. The magnitude of her battle required her to stop working, completely turning her life upside down.

Feeling Like a Spectator of Her Own Life

Despite the shock, Alvina was fortunate to access medical care and receive exceptional support from her relatives. Her spouse actively supported their children and helped manage household tasks, ensuring Alvina received the care she needed.

”She remembers chemotherapy treatments like roller coaster episodes with large hollows. There were days when I was very badly out of point and as soon as I started to take over, a chemotherapy session weakened me again, so that I never had been able to get back all the way on my feet.

During her treatment, she sometimes had to isolate herself with her young children because of viruses in school and daycare.

However her emotions spiraled to sadness and so he felt like a spectator of her own life. And losing the intimate ability to care for her children herself because of viral spread, some days she felt just like an animal close to being mad.

Alvina admits she spent all of her date nights at the Emergency Room helping her neighbors to manage their emergencies and cases of drug abuse (that way she earned money and gave them home care at night time, for which they were grateful). Her husband was her hero because he got her at school in time. From hospital to doctor appointments he was not worried, but slept soundly in trait of his wife.

After chemotherapy, Alvina transitioned from a “warrior” mode to a “post-war” mode and fully realized the damage left by the disease.

“She had felt she was living in a ‘broken body,’ unable to find her pre-cancer state, she
permitting she could not quite understand what her limits were. This crippling uncertainty
increased her fear that she might not be able to accomplish anything without super

Alvina attests to the importance of surrounding herself with supportive individuals during treatments and recovery. She notes, Both the exchange support and healing
work of these professionals, as well as their meaningful observations, they
decisively helped her to regain the strength and self-esteem which were essential

to revitalize her passion for life’s great events of health.

Today, Alvina is in remission. She emphasizes the significance of good medical support, access to psychological and physical rehabilitation services, and the support of a community of patients who have gone through similar experiences.

She recounts numerous challenges faced by patients, including the financial burden of treatments and hospitalization, the impact of a cancer diagnosis on family life, the pause it places on everyday activities, career progression, disparities in healthcare accessibility between urban and rural areas, and insufficient resources.
