Updated June 30, 2025
Sporting CP’s president, Frederico Varandas, believes Viktor Gyökeres will probably leave the club during this summer’s transfer window. Varandas acknowledged interest in the Swedish international, whose scoring record has attracted attention from top Premier League clubs.
Manchester United and Arsenal are among the clubs reportedly interested in acquiring Gyökeres, who tallied 54 goals in 52 appearances last season. Though, Sporting CP’s valuation of the player could prove to be a sticking point in negotiations.
Varandas referenced recent transfers of other players to illustrate his club’s position on Gyökeres’s value. he specifically mentioned Martín Zubimendi’s move to Arsenal for €65 million, about $76 million.
He also noted the transfers of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo within the Premier League, which he said were for around €75 million. Varandas suggested that Gyökeres’s superior quality justifies a similar, if not higher, transfer fee.
“If you ask me today, there is a strong possibility that Viktor will leave,” Varandas told A Bola.
Gyökeres remains under contract with Sporting CP until June 2028 and has a release clause of €100 million.
What’s next
Negotiations between Sporting CP and interested clubs are expected to intensify in the coming weeks as the transfer window progresses. The ultimate transfer fee and Gyökeres’s destination remain uncertain.
