updated May 28, 2025
Good news for fans of the comedy series “Hacks”: Max has announced that the show will return for a fifth season. The renewal comes ahead of the fourth season’s finale, scheduled to air Thursday.
Starring jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, “Hacks” has garnered critical acclaim, including an Emmy win for Outstanding Comedy Series for its third season. The show was created by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky and also features Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Mark Indelicato, and Rose Abdoo.
Sarah Aubrey, Head of Max Original Programming, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Yes! More! We congratulate Hacks‘ singularly talented cast and crew and our great partners at Universal Television.”
Erin Underhill, President of Universal Television, echoed this sentiment: “Like Deborah Vance herself, Hacks only gets bolder, sharper, and more iconic with time. We’re beyond thrilled to keep the laughter rolling.”
The fourth season, which premiered in April, follows Deborah, played by Smart, and Ava, played by Einbinder, as they work to launch their late-night show. The series has been described as one of the “most beloved comedies in recent years” and “one of the funniest shows on TV.”
Downs shared a story about their attempt to get Cher to make a cameo on the show. Despite multiple requests, Cher declined. Downs recounted how Cher’s manager suggested incorporating Cher’s ice cream brand, Cherlato, into the script, but even that didn’t secure her participation.
Downs recalled, “So we wrote a commercial for Cherlato. Deborah was gonna go to the Cherlato factory, she was gonna taste all the Cherlato, she was gonna love the Cherlato, and then when it came down to shoot, we got a pass.”
What’s next
Viewers can anticipate further developments in Deborah and Ava’s careers as they navigate the challenges of the entertainment industry in the upcoming fifth season of “Hacks”.
